Atheism is too-often defined incorrectly as a belief system. Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods.
Older dictionaries define atheism as….“a belief that there is no God”.
So realistically one should not expect an Atheist in Recovery to be comfortable with the “liberal” use of God in the Steps and Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. To a True Atheist as defined above, “God” is not relevant to Recovery and may often be a hindrance to further investigation.
This independence from traditional recovery dogma is often confusing; or worse yet, fear inducing to those involved with Recovery Programs based on a “God” as an essential component of their core belief systems and daily practice.
